The East Riding village of Bishop Burton lies about 5 kilometres west of the large market town of Beverley. On the outskirts of the village, to the east, is a field which contains a medieval stone marking the boundary for the sanctuary of St John of Beverley, and this is now an Ancient Monument of some significance. Back in the middle of the 18th century Bishop Burton held its own race meetings, the first of which took place on Monday 9th April 1759 when the feature race, the Bishop Burton Purse, was won by Farmer owned by Mr Hardy. Although a meeting did take place the next year on Monday 3rd November 1760, it proved to be the last held in the village. |
